Nu-Calgon A/C EasySeal

2013 09-04

One of the most difficult and costly tasks is servicing a system that has a refrigeration leak. Given today’s requirements for leak management and repair, it is very important that leaks be repaired. A/C EasySeal addresses the need for a quick and reliable method to seal these problematic leaks. In fact, it can also be used to prevent leaks.

Prevents and repairs
It is designed to prevent as well as repair leaks anywhere in the system; condensers, evaporators, you name it.  It is easily injected into the system, and travels with the refrigerant, searching for leaks. Because A/C EasySeal circulates through the system with the refrigerant it is able to find leaks faster, using less sealant than those designed to mix and travel with the system’s oil. Keep in mind that only a small portion of the system oil actually migrates with the refrigerant through the system.

How does it seal?
It reacts with moisture or air that is naturally present at a leak, forming a secure seal. It is compatible with the refrigerant, oil and all system materials and will not react until it comes into contact with the air and moisture at the leak, forming a seal.

Time Saver
It finds leaks quickly and seals them, saving the time and money required in searching for the smallest leaks. With A/C EasySeal, you are able to just add a can to the system and be confident the leak has been fixed and move on.

You can add A/C EasySeal to your Pre-Season order through the end of April, or contact your Ferguson representative to place an order.

Troubleshooting A Hot Surface Ingitor

2012 05-11

If the ignitor element is failing to glow, the carbide ignitor element may be cracked, the wire connections between the integrated furnace control (IFC) and the ignitor may be bad or the IFC may be defective.

Step 1: Disconnect power to the furnace.

Step 2: Inspect the ignitor assembly for obvious defects such as a cracked or damaged carbide tip, frayed or damaged wiring or bad and incomplete wire terminal/plug connections.  Replace the ignitor assembly and/or secure the plug connections if any such conditions are found.

Step 3: Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance through the hot surface ignitor at room temperature (70 to 75 degrees). If infinite resistance is measured, the element is open and therefore must be replaced. Depending on the manufacturer, the ignitor should read between 20 and 300 ohms (see specifications for actual ranges).

Step 4: Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity through the wires where the 115 volt signal is sent from the IFC to the ignitor assembly. You should read no resistance. Infinite resistance indicates the wire is open and must be replaced.

Step 5:  Restore power to the furnace and initiate a call for heat. Use a voltmeter to measure voltage from the IFC to the ignitor assembly at the assembly connector plug. Once the pre-purge cycle is complete, the IFC should send 115 volts to the ignitor. If 115 volts is present, the ignitor assembly is defective and must be replaced.  If 115 volts is not present, the IFC board is defective and must be replaced.

Only Pay For What You Need

2012 21-09

Written by TIF

When talking refrigerant scales, a scale with higher weight capacity generally equates to a higher price tag – due to the higher capacity of the electronic strain gauge.  Therefore it makes sense to only pay for the capacity you really need.

For example, a refrigerant tank rated for 50 pounds weighs about 27 pounds when empty. Per DOE standards, the maximum fill for the tank is 80% of capacity so the technician is limited to adding roughly 40 pounds (80% of the 50 pound rating) of refrigerant to that tank. So, with the tank filled to maximum capacity, it will weigh 27 plus 40 or just about 67 pounds.

So the question becomes, what weight capacity does a technician need for their refrigerant scale? For most residential and light commercial jobs, the refrigerant tank will weigh less than 100 pounds when fill.  So for these applications the TIF9010A, with a rated capacity of 110 pounds is just right.

Use The Fan Blade To Size The Motor

2012 12-09

Written by US Motors

Using the specifications of the fan blade is the best way to determine the correct horsepower for a replacement condenser fan motor. The diameter, angle and number of fan blades, along with the RPM of the motor, are the pieces of information necessary to make this determination.

Let’s look at the following scenario. You are diagnosing a unit and have determined that it is in need of a new condenser fan motor. The failed motor is 1/5 HP and 1140 RPM.  The fan blade seems to be in good shape so you have no plans to replace it.  So you should just replace the failed motor with a motor of the same size, right? Well, not exactly. It is always best to check the specs on the fan blade before replacing the condenser fan motor on any unit, and especially on older models.  In this case, the original was a four blade 18” fan with a 27 degree angle – but you don’t know that. All you can do is measure the current fan and it is a four blade 18” fan with a 30 degree angle.

By looking at this chart, you can determine the correct horsepower for the replacement motor based on the specification of the fan blade.

The original was a four blade 18” fan with 27 degree angle (1140 RPM motor) and was replaced at some time with the current four blade 18” fan blade having an angle of 30 degrees (1140 RPM motor). Therefore a larger horsepower motor (1/4 HP) is needed.
